Unhooking your brain from the tv and social media can be a scary thing. But, once in awhile it’s nice to learn a new class on a subject we know little to nothing about or perhaps even a topic that we think we know from beginning to end. They also make for good resume additions under the continued education portion. These are some of the online classes and the sites that they hail from that I have taken/in the process of/or thinking of taking. Hopefully you might find something that picks at your brain.
Links will be provided to each class or website.
I’m going to start with the priciest of the classes I’ve taken first, but I definitely feel like I got my time’s worth out of all classes that I took, from pricy to free. Although there were typos in one of the classes guides that irked me, so I pointed them out to the teacher in a private email so that they could be fixed. Apparently it was the doing of a student helper.
Gotham Writer’s Workshop (Most if not all were 10-week classes) *All classes taken were online (and in 2016) given the fact that I unfortunately don’t reside in NYC. But they do have classes there usually, for the time being they have Zoom.
Video Game Writing I: Class has already started. Teacher is David Kuelz ***Class taken in 2016. I found this to be the most fascinating class because I’ve been playing video games since the original Nintendo and hadn’t given much thought to the writing aspect of them, other than a lot of them had great plots and were visually awestriking.
Novel Writing II: I’m not positive, but it does look like perhaps they changed the curriculum a bit for the class, I don’t remember it being called Novel First Draft Level II, but I could be wrong. They have a Novel Critique Level II that sounds up my alley, I’ll have to add it to my Wishlist.
Screenwriting I
A subject I always wanted to learn more about, as someone who loves movies, I enjoyed this class a lot. Especially when movies I hadn’t watched were brought up as examples. Hopefully I will be able to put this to more use when I attempt to write my novel in screenplay form.
Food Writing *Wishlist
I’ve been wanting to take this class for about 4 years now. It’s just a writing topic that I don’t know all that much about and who wouldn’t like to be a food critic and get paid to eat, I mean I’m sure there’s much more to it than that, but I’d like to find out more about it, outside of the halls of google search.
Universal Class: Membership is $189 for a year and is the way to go as some classes just on their own can be $90 each. Certifications and CEUs awarded at completion. The best part about them is that as far as I know you can still go at your own pace and they are online.

Haunted Places
The classes were fun and the site itself was easy to navigate. In the end I got a lot out of them. The site offers an array of other unusual classes, like a Paranormal Investigation course that is on my Wishlist. I unfortunately thought I only had a membership for 6 months instead of a year and lost that amount of time, but one day I’ll pick it up again.
One of my favorite online classes was a WVU Continued Education Class, Introduction to Horror Writing, taught by Author Lisa Wood. She is an amazing teacher. Unfortunately the class I took was in 2015 and is no longer offered, last time that I checked. But if you can find an intro to horror class anywhere, I would recommend giving it a chance. It was one of my favorite classes to date. And read some stories that truly made me feel like I was losing my mind, in the best way.
